When most people think of Llandudno they probably think of an ageing population and traditional seaside entertainment but tucked away on Builder Street is 3rd space at the Great Orme Brewery and it is building a burgeoning reputation for great stand-up comedy. The first time I went I just turned up and bought ticket but these days booking in advance is advised. I’m not sure how many it holds but at a guess I reckon less than 100. I went with my son and he did comment that at 25 he was the youngest in the audience but don’t let that put you off. At £12.50 for a night out plus some great beer can you really go wrong. Even if you don’t like all the acts it’s worth it for the resident MC, Dave Rothnie and the joke competition
They also have a monthly music night which is very much in the folk and singer/songwriter category and that is to be expected considering the size of the venue but having said that they have had bands such as The Eskies who probably defy categorisation(they are described as purveyors of music that meanders from sea soaked waltz to Italian tarantella, from Brassy funeral march-esque lament to weep along Klezmar knees up, from chain gang holler to rag time finger snap) and also Wille and the Bandits a classic blues rock three piece, who I was expecting to blow the roof off but they played more of an acoustic set and were brilliant…..without a doubt one of the best music venues I have been to!
They have recently added a monthly jazz night which I must confess is not my favourite genre of music but I am sure I will get down there at some point. There have also been folk and gin evenings and in some respects the list is endless so if you want to find out what is going on down there then the best place to go is their Facebook page although they do have a website. I promise you will not be disappointed and even if you are there is the beer….my favourites are Welsh Black and Chocolatino!
