The hardest part of moving to a new area when you have no connections at all is making friends. To be honest quite a few of my friends did say ‘but you don’t know anybody’ and occasionally it has felt daunting but over the last few years as I freelanced as an IT Project Manager I have got used to moving around and one of the best ways of meeting new people and making new friends is Meetup.
In a nutshell Meetup is an online social networking portal that facilitates offline group meetings in various localities around the world. In larger cities then the Meetup groups tend to be set up for a specific interest, e.g. books, games, movies, dining out but here in North Wales they tend to be more generalist so that within one group there will be quiz nights, meals, walks, music.
Also in North Wales you will find that people are in a more than one group and as a result the event might be advertised in more than one Meetup, so although it looks as if only a couple of people are going to an event actually there can be quite a few.
Anyone can join and usually it is free although there is a cost to the organiser of the group and some do pass that on but it is usually not more than £5. Once you have just search for groups in your area to join and sign up for your first event!
