On their website even the Pen-y-Bryn in Colwyn Bay acknowledges that from the outside it looks a bit like a medical centre but that is where the similarity ends and as they also say once you go inside, you’ll find lovely oak floors, open fires, bookcases and old furniture…….if only going to the doctors was enjoyable as going to the Pen-y-Bryn!
It is part of a pub chain called Brunning and Price and normally I wouldn’t feature somewhere that wasn’t an independent but in this case I have to make an exception as you wouldn’t know that it wasn’t.
In the eighteen months or so that I have lived in North Wales I have been there at least a dozen times and every time has been superb from the service, to the food, to the atmosphere. To be honest if I lived a bit closer I would probably have been more often. I notice on their Facebook page that there are some negative reviews but I have never had anything but a good experience.
There is nothing that I can fault and I am not sure how they do it. Quite often one of the things you notice with a chain is that portions can be on the small side but not here, you certainly will never go away feeling hungry.
Brunning and Price also have a number of other pubs in North Wales including the Glasfryn at Mold and the Pant-yr-Ochain at Gresford near Wrexham, both of which I have been to and they match the Pen-y-Bryn in every aspect for food, service and atmosphere.
Back to the Pen-y-Bryn, it is a busy pub but I have always managed to get a table and as with the other Brunning and Price pubs they run a loyalty scheme whereby you collect a meal ticket for every main course ordered and once you collect eight tickets(from any of their pubs) you can exchange them for a main course(although terms and conditions apply).
Other things that set the Pen-y-Bryn apart for your average pub is monthly live music and also like some of the other pubs in the chain there is a circular walk you can do. What else is there to say other than some good local ales and a great location with some stunning views. Not your average pub and certainly not a medical centre!
